Empties

First Beauty Empties of 2018

I don’t know about you, but I feel so damn proud when I get to the end of a makeup product. I know lot’s of people do Empties and post mostly shampoo or lotion, but everyone goes through that fairly quick, so it’s kind of cheating. I’m talking about MAKE UP! Lipstick, mascara, blush, etc. If you can get to the very end of a lipstick tube, then you deserve some sort of award, in my opinion.

I’m going to be honest and admit that I didn’t exactly go through all these products at the same time. I have been accumulating these for a few months so that I can actually have something to write about, but one of my goals for this year is to shop my collection more often and I have been even been putting aside some products I want to pan (future post coming), so I hope that I can have a few more Empties post in 2018.

So, without any further ado, I present you my EMPTIES!

Marcelle Xtension Plus Curl Mascara. This should come as no surprise to anyone. I ADORE this mascara and use it almost daily. It leaves my lashes feathery, long and curled. I get zero clumping and it costs $15 on the Marcelle site. If you wait for a sale, you can get it even cheaper.

Covergirl Vitalist Healthy Elixir Foundation in Creamy Natural. Another product that I use very regularly. I think I got this bottle in an Influenster box back in August or so and it’s definitely a bit too dark for me now, so I have been mixing it with my Burts Bees Goodness Glow Foundation to lighten it up a bit. I recently bought my third bottle of this in Classic Ivory and I totally recommend it. It’s definitely dewy and medium coverage, but buildable if you prefer something more full coverage. It smells lovely and when set with powder, lasts all day. Also, there are always tons of coupons, which means that from time to time, you can get it for about $9/bottle.

Anastasia Beverly Hills DipBrow Pomade in Medium Brown. I can’t believe that I actually got through almost all of this stuff before it dried out on me because when I purchased this off of Birchbox using some points I had, I accidently got one shade darker than I usually buy and then shortly after, I cancelled my Birchbox subscription and felt weird asking to exchange it. However, I always went in with a  light hand and was able to fill in my brows and deepen the overall color to match my hair. As a girl with blonde eyebrows, I always appreciate a product that pulls double duty.

Almay Brow Pencil in Dark Blonde. Another I can’t believe I used all this stuff up product. As a girl who relies on above mentioned pomade to fill and color her brows, I find pencils can only fill, but not exactly darken to my liking. However, this pencil is creamy enough to do both. The tip is wide, which gives you the ability to apply color in larger sweeps and when angled just right, carve and fill in those sparse parts well. Also, it comes with a really nice spoolie, which I still use even though I used up all the product.

Ok, so I’m about cheat just a bit and showcase two non makeup empties, however, don’t judge. I usually don’t get to the end of face products that quickly either:

Farsali Rose Gold Elixir. I actually purchased the travel size of this serum thinking that I would never get through the larger bottle, but boy was I wrong! I love this stuff. First off, it smells like orange or maybe grapefruits, which I love either. Second, I apply this in lieu of my moisturizer and primer before I put on makeup and it is the perfect base. It doesn’t sit on the skin at all and leaves your face all nice and glowy.

Clarins Extra Firming Day and Night Cream. I got a deluxe sized sample of this to try from Influenster and I really enjoyed using them. I actually wrote a dedicated post to this product, which you can read here. I would say that I was able to squeeze out maybe one more week from these tubes and if I had $180 hanging around probably buy them, but since I don’t, just going to have to jump back to my Olay Revitalist.

I hope to bring you more empties this year. My goal is at least once a quarter, so wish me luck!

Till next time, my friends!

Nope! – Covergirl Peacock Flare Mascara

You ever find a beauty product that you are supremely loyal to? I’m not really talking about loving a brand and buying all or some of their products, but rather a specific item from a specific brand that you always buy? Well, that’s me with mascara.

Last year, I got a sample of Marcelle’s Xtension Plus Curl mascara in a Birchbox and ever since then, I have never found another mascara that compares. It lengthens and curls my lashes to perfection without leaving them clumpy. I have gone through like 4 tubes and even though I have tried various other mascara’s since then, they are always a big fat “Nope”. I don’t even own any other make up from Marcelle except for this mascara and the reason I keep on trying to find a good substitute is because Marcelle isn’t currently sold in any stores and I have to buy my beloved mascara from Birchbox or from directly from their website. Loving something so exclusively means that unless you have back ups, if you happen to lose, misplace or, God forbid it gets discontinued, you are basically up shit’s creek.

I’ll be like Elaine from Seinfeld when her favorite contraceptive sponge got discontinued and she had to ask all the men she was dating if they were “sponge worthy” before agreeing to have sex, except every time I put on make up, I’ll have to decide if today’s event is mascara worthy.

Me: Is the movie we are going to see “mascara worthy”?

Hubs: It’s Justice League

Me: Oh HELL NO! I’ll just wear sunglasses so nobody can see my shame.

So, my search continues for a good replacement and when I was in Target a few weeks back, I came across Covergirl’s Peacock Flare mascara. Immediately, I was drawn in by the packaging. I am a serious sucker for art deco and the feathery blue and black triangle design on the tube, gave me Great Gatsby vibes, so I threw it in the cart without a second thought.

Unfortunately, that is where the love ends. The minute I pulled the brush from the tube, I groaned. It had these short, rubber spikes that are so popular nowadays on mascara, but that I hate with a passion. I often wonder whatever happened to the traditional curved bristle mascara brush. They are definitely going the way of the dinosaur and as a girl with thin, wispy lashes, the rubber spiked wands just turn my lashes all clumpy and creepy Annabelle doll looking, when what I want are feathery curled lashes.

However, I soldier on and begin to apply the mascara. In preparation for the clump, I wiped down the bristles a bit and applied, beginning at the root and doing that little jiggle all the way to the tips. The first swipe, left most of the product at the root, but didn’t give my lashes much volume. So I wait a bit and apply a second layer, but the product is just kind of hanging around at the root and not really going anywhere else. I can’t seem to get it to lengthen.

This is where I find that a bristle brush excels. The fibers of the brush carry the product from room to tip and help make your lashes long, which still providing that volume that you need. The rubber bristles in this mascara are a little too far apart to do the job for me and thus the dreaded clump.

Not judging here though. If you are digging the clumpy lash look, then by all means, go and grab a tube of Peacock Flare. However, if you want more feathery lashes, then don’t be deceived by the bird reference and continue the hunt for your favorite mascara replacement.

Also, if you happen to come across any bristle, curved mascara’s and want to give it a shout out, leave it in the comments below. I will be happy to give it a try to see if it is a good replacement for my beloved Marcelle Xtension Plus Curl.

Till next time, friends.

MOTD

Shake What Yo Momma Gave Ya!

So I was totally naked today. Not like “Free the Boobies” naked, but like, no foundation naked. For all you clear faced gals out there, I know you are wondering, “What’s the big deal?” But trust me, for some one who has freckles, wrinkles, acne scars and actual acne (at 40!), this is a big deal.

I didn’t necessarily have a perfect skin day. In fact, I am currently sporting 3 zits, major under eye circles, the usual forehead wrinkles and the ever-present freckles. In fact, since it’s summer, my freckles look like they had babies, so there are even more in my face…like literally! However, today I wanted to wear this new stick concealer I’ve been liking from Besame, but I couldn’t find it. So since I was in such a rush, I decided to just hit the Tarte Shape tape in the problem areas (see above). Highlight with my CoverFX Enhancer Drops in Sunlight. Do a little quick  dab and blend with my NARS Liquid Blush in Torrid. Contour the eyes a bit with the Hard Candy Top 10 Satin EyeShadow palette and curl the lashes with my trust Marcelle Xtension Plus Mascara. And brows…this girl needs brows. Then top it off with some Stila Liquid Lipstick in Patina.

Gee…that actually sounds like a lot, but work with me, ok?

The look was certainly not perfect. In fact, I picked apart my imperfections in the rearview mirror when I was dropping off the kids in school, but as I was listening to “I Like It” from Enrique Iglesias in the radio on my way back, I started thinking that I actually do like it and as started dancing along, it became even more apparent that I need to appreciate what I got.

Screw the zits, freckles, and wrinkles. I may not be perfect, but I am alive and healthy and I will continue to Shake What My Momma Gave Me.

Rock on, my friends!
