Maybelline – Python Metallic Lip Kit Review

I was perusing Amazon a few weeks back, looking for some new mascara’s to try out, and as I am scrolling, happily adding stuff to my cart that eventually will sit there for a few days until it gets downgraded to Saved for Later and then eventually Removed (we all do that, right?), I come across this Maybelline Python Metallic Lip Kit. I stop scrolling as I have never heard of this product and my first thought is that it must be something either that has not yet hit the drugstore shelves or maybe is an older product.

There are 6 color combinations to choose from, ranging from pinky nude to an edgy blue. Seeing as I am a red lip kind of girl, I begin eyeing the color Passionate and, of course, add it to my cart. Low and behold, it passes muster and I actually end up purchasing it.

I don’t know what I was expecting, but when it arrived 2 days later, I was immediately disappointed for the following reasons:

1. It’s freaking tiny! The kit is about the size of a single eyeshadow compact, and contains .06 oz of lip color and .04 oz of metallic powder (More on that later).
2. It came broken! The metallic powder crumbled and when I opened the Amazon box, it was all over the place. The good news is that I was able to press some of it back, but still, that’s a bummer. Amazon did give me a full refund for it AND I didn’t have to return it, which was freaking AWESOME!!

So, based on the above, I am going to preface the rest of this post by saying that the best thing about this product is that I basically got it for free. As I mentioned above, the kit is tiny. I initially paid $9.99 for this and I truly don’t know if it’s worth the price. Mostly, because I am little confused on what it’s true purpose is, but also because the products execution is kind of crappy.

The lip color, although very pigmented, actually feels more like a balm when you put it on, which I don’t have any general  objections to, but I was expecting something slightly creamier. It doesn’t necessarily glide on effortlessly.

The metallic powder actually feels mousse-like, so when I was pressing the product back in it actually melded quite nicely into place. When you apply it on top of the balm and rub your lips together, it does have a powdery feel to it. The problem with the metallic powder is that it takes quite a bit of product to make your lips shimmer. I feel like you will go through it quite faster than the balm, which really does not require a lot of product to show up.

I actually really like the balm. I like to go into it with a light hand and it gives me a nice wash of lip color that looks like you have naturally berry tinted lips. Since it is a balm and not a lip tint, the downside is that it’s not a very lasting look, which means you have to reapply throughout the day. Which leads me to my CHIEF complaint, the fact that the easiest and least troublesome method of applying this for me is with my fingers and that SUCKS BALLS because then you have to constantly carry around makeup wipes to remove the product from your hands. You could technically apply it with a lip brush, but I just don’t want to.

I mean, I’m a mom. A HOT MESS MOM to be exact. I carry so much crap with me already, I really don’t want to carry something else that is going to get lost at the bottom of my purse and I’ll pick it out like 3 months later when I am looking for a receipt or something.

The metallic powder is quite forgettable, in my opinion. I don’t like the powdery feel on my lips and I really don’t think it’s revolutionary in any way. If I was going to go for a metallic lip, I would prefer to use  Tattoo Junkee’s Metallic Lip Paint because the formula is already metallic, long-lasting and virtually transfer proof. In addition, it comes with a small pot of glitter to make it pop even more if you want, although I don’t find it to be necessary.

So am I missing something here, friends? Did anyone else try this and not end up as confused as to what they hell it’s supposed to be? Why the heck is it even called Python? Am I even using this product correctly? If so, please enlighten me in the comments below.
